In the early portion of the press conferences and interviews that will take place throughout the course of fall camp for the Horns gave a peak into the quarterback competition as it stands now. Herman has stated that sophomore Sam Ehlinger is getting the first team reps at this moment with junior Shane Buechele getting the second team reps.

That left four-star pro-style quarterback Newbury Park, CA, product Cameron Rising as getting more reps among the two freshmen at the position. The other freshman quarterback is four-star dual-threat Newcastle, OK, native Casey Thompson. Rising looks to be the more polished of the two quarterbacks, hence him getting the better reps in fall practice.

However, the quarterback depth chart is likely to change very quickly for the Horns as the regular season moves along. Whoever performs well early in the season, especially against the Maryland Terrapins and USC Trojans, is who should start for the rest of the 2018 campaign. Whether that be Ehlinger or Buechele, or a freshman, Herman knows what’s best for his offense.

Moreover, Rising does bring a huge arm to the Forty Acres and the sneaky ability to evade the pocket when pressure reaches him. Rising’s legs are more of a threat than a lot of pundits would give him credit for. Even his high school highlights showed his underrated dual-threat ability that could earn him some playing time in 2018.
