Texas Football: Prepare for a massive performance from Daniel Young
Young’s Week 1 performance
There were some high expectations for Young entering the season opener. He was coming off a performance where he racked up more than 100 total yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. Mizzou has about as good of a front seven as Maryland does too. You’d figure the momentum would carry through for Young in some regard.
In the early going, Young couldn’t get much going. He finished the game with just 27 yards on eight carries. Young wound up with the second most carries of all Texas running backs. Senior Tre Watson led the Horns in carries. Young actually finished up with the worst yards per carry average of all running backs that got more than five carries.
A turnaround shouldn’t be too far around the corner for Young, but Week 1 was obviously not the start he was looking for. He’ll be set with an offensive line that he knows is improved from last year. Texas could actually scheme around an improved offensive line under a new co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in Herb Hand.
The resources are there for Young to find a higher level of success and efficiency in 2018. An issue that he could run into is the increased level of competition for carries in the backfield. Watson and true freshman Keaontay Ingram weren’t there last year to take carries away from him, but depth is never a bad thing for the Horns at running back.
