Texas Football: Tom Herman praises players for response to Maryland loss
What Herman has to do to keep off the hot seat
The rumors started going around pretty fast this year as to if Herman is on the hot seat, and even if his tenure will be any different than that of Charlie Strong. Yet, it’s too early to tell if Herman should worry about his seat heating up considering the point he’s at in the rebuild of this Texas football program.
USC is a good test since its head coach, Clay Helton, is also in rebuild mode with his program. Texas and USC should be in similar spots right now giving the talent level and coaching staff for each team. Yet, USC is still in the AP Top 25 rankings after two weeks of action, and the Horns fell out after the first game alone.
You’d have to figure that Herman needs to win this game for Texas football fans to really be happy with where their team is at. Texas nearly pulled off the upset against the Trojans last season, and that was on the road at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Since Texas gets USC at home at DKR under the lights this time around, it should work in favor of the good guys.
The bulk of the determination as to Herman’s job security with the Horns will come in Big 12 play. Texas had a pretty tough non-conference slate that is taking a toll on the picture of this program in the early part of the regular season. The Big 12 is pretty deep this fall outside of two or three teams at the bottom. It could be a very difficult road ahead coming up for the Horns with the TCU Horned Frogs ready the week after Texas faces USC.
