4. Texas defense continues to keep this team alive

This was not anticipated for the Horns this year. Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando has saved this team on numerous occasions this season and is the main reason for the 6-1 (4-0 Big 12) record for this team. Texas has now forced almost as many interceptions as it has allowed passing touchdowns against this season.

Moreover, the run defense is almost as solid as it was last year, giving up less than four yards per carry and around 125 rushing yards per game. Baylor couldn’t get much going on the ground in this game. The only rushing play of note for the Bears was a seven-yard rushing touchdown from the former Tennessee Volunteers transfer Jalen Hurd.

The overall leader in rushing yards for Baylor on the day was Charlie Brewer. Including sacks and tackles for loss on him, Brewer racked up 22 rushing yards on 13 carries. With that, the only other touchdown for Baylor came on a touchdown pass from Brewer to junior wide receiver Denzel Mims in the first quarter.

More important than anything, though, was that the Horns held a Big 12 opponent to 17 points or less for the third time in four tries this year. Oklahoma was the only team that managed to put up a high number of points against this Texas defense, but that is one of the best offenses in the nation. Few Big 12 teams can even come close to touching the defensive strength of Texas football.
