Texas Basketball: Will the former Longhorn Kevin Durant be on the move next offseason?

The Golden State Warriors might not be able to hang onto former Texas basketball forward Kevin Durant come the 2019 NBA Offseason.

The long and mostly illustrious history of the Texas basketball program had one of its best players ever roll through the Forty Acres within the past 12 years. Golden State Warriors two-time Finals MVP and superstar forward Kevin Durant is lighting up the NBA again with only one year remaining on his contract.

Texas basketball only had Durant for one season, but he surely made an impact in that short time. Durant’s presence sparked a wave of high level recruiting for Texas basketball for the following decade after Durant committed. And, the Texas Longhorns now have a former basketball standout that is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world.

However, Durant could be on the move during the 2019 NBA off-season with his contract running up in Golden State. He could choose to resign with the Warriors and stay alongside the likes of point guard Stephen Curry and power forward Draymond Green. Yet, Durant could make a move similar to what LeBron James did in leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2018 off-season.

Durant now has the elusive NBA Titles he was chasing in his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. With those rings in hand now, literally, Durant might want to move on and build something new elsewhere. The entirety of the NBA is sure to be fighting to land his services for the 2019-20 season and beyond.

Some of the early odds have Durant landing with the obvious destination. back with the Warriors. Yet, it’s anyone’s best guess as to what he would decide from next. Some rumors have it that he could be joining LeBron and the Lakers next season to stay in the sunshine state. The New York Knicks also put out a spirited advertisement to recruit Durant.

The speculation as to where the former Texas basketball standout Durant will land will be interesting to follow throughout the entire 2018-19 NBA season. At this point, the NBA is almost more in the thick of the headlines during the off-season than during the season itself.

Durant’s free agency is going to be no different with potentially the best player in the world, right now, opening up his career to a change in team for the second time. If nothing else, it’s very likely that Durant will wind up in one of the biggest markets in the NBA if he doesn’t go back to Golden State, like with the Lakers or Knicks.
