10. Fall camp injuries

Before Week 1 even came around, the Horns had a wave of injuries and transfers that offered insight into what the start of the year could amount to and what the roster entailed. The transfers included current Texas Tech Red Raiders safety John Bonney and linebacker Edwin Freeman, who both left likely due to a lack of potential playing time this year.

Some key injuries also included some players that missed a good portion of the regular season to date including true freshman safety DeMarvion Overshown and linebacker Ayodele Adeoye. If they’d both been healthy entering Week 1, each might be a more prominent figure on the defensive side of the ball now.

A few other players that are recognizable names that the Horns missed out on for Week 1 of the regular season included junior linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch and senior deep-threat receiver John Burt. While those aren’t the biggest names for either side of the ball for the Horns, it still hurts the overall depth for the team.

Texas also missed two key linebackers in seniors Anthony Wheeler and Gary Johnson for at least some portion of the first two games of the season due to targeting penalties called against the Maryland Terrapins and in the bowl win from 2017. That hurt along with missing some other linebackers that could’ve filled in against Maryland.
