9. Late game turnovers in season opener

This point is beat to death at this point with how the end of the game against the Terps went for Texas football. But, it’s something that we shouldn’t lose sight of in light of how well sophomore starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger played so far in 2018. He had just an incredible amount of development between the Maryland loss and each game since.

It was not only Ehlinger that ran into issues with turnovers late in the game against Maryland. For the second straight year though, Texas football found itself falling behind Maryland in the first half to create an uphill battle the rest of the way. Both the ground game and passing game had extra tension placed on it to excel in the second half.

As a result, Ehlinger and senior running back Tre Watson (in his Texas debut) had costly turnovers in the fourth quarter since the offense had to change its gameplan a bit. We could see the difference between how the Horns liked to comfortably run the offense under Tom Herman and second-year offensive coordinator Tim Beck in the fourth quarter compared to the second and third.

Ehlinger tossed two picks in the fourth quarter in the span of just a few minutes. All the way up until the exit of Week 9, the sophomore signal caller still doesn’t have a single interception since that letdown against Maryland.
