5. Tom Herman rising to the occasion in a weird way

This is a weird season for Herman and the Texas football program. We’ve gone from jumping to the conclusion that Texas football is back all the way to hoping that this team would stay afloat down the stretch. The Horns notched a timely win that was much needed in Week 11 on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Not only was this a very scary game for the Horns since it was comparable to the circumstances surrounding them in the Oklahoma State loss, Texas Tech wasn’t a “big-time opponent”. The common school of thought has it with Herman, and with good reason, that his teams play up and down to the competition. Texas Tech could qualify as a team Texas could play down to.

Yet, the Horns looked to take complete control of this game with a dominant display in the second and third quarters. This was not so much a tale of two halves for Texas as it was completely different levels of effort in the first and last 15 minutes compared to the middle 30. Herman seemed to find a way to win this game with some similar issues presented in a different way.

Texas was outscored by Texas Tech 31-14 in the first and fourth quarters and countered by winning the second and third quarters 27-3. Finding that consistency on the field for an entire game got away from the Horns again. That cannot happen against a looming opponent in Week 12 like Iowa State under head coach Matt Campbell.
