Texas Football: What we learned from win over Iowa State
Buy into Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster
The Texas football secondary defied all the odds to guide this team to a win. Iowa State doesn’t have the most potent passing attack in the Big 12, but it still presented a threat. Forcing this Iowa State offense to be one dimensional also made it difficult for them to get anything going on the ground.
Texas held the freshman sensation Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy in check in a big way. Purdy didn’t manage a single touchdown on the game and also tossed one pick. Backup Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt also got some action, including six passing attempts. Purdy didn’t make the impact anticipated. That’s all thanks to the efforts of the Texas secondary.
As we look deeper into the effort from the secondary, true freshmen safeties Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster stuck out. Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando went back and forth in the methods of use for Foster. However, he stood out in this game with five total tackles and one sack on the day.
Then, Sterns was potentially the defensive MVP. Texas got five total tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss out of Sterns. The good thing that we saw from Sterns was more sure tackling and the ability to blow up the backfield. Some other players that stood out on defense included senior linebacker Gary Johnson and sophomore defensive back Chris Brown. Johnson led the team in total tackles and Brown nabbed his first career pick.
