Thankful: Sam Ehlinger’s emergence

There’s not much more that Texas football fans could’ve hoped for this fall out of the offense than the emergence of sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger. A breakout season from the most important position on the field is huge for the Horns. This breakout campaign is something that could be building toward a Heisman push in 2019.

Ehlinger was good as a true freshman, given the circumstances. Some of the costly mistakes he made in his first year on the Forty Acres did leave something to be desired this year. Ehlinger tossed seven interceptions last year. This year, he would need to add five more interceptions to his total to match that from 2017.

All in all, Ehlinger has more than 3,000 total yards and 31 total touchdowns, compared to just two interceptions. Those two interceptions came in one quarter of football in a very forgettable loss to the Maryland Terrapins. Outside of that loss to Maryland, Ehlinger is a big reason why the Horns are having such a successful season.

This type of performance could lead some to put Ehlinger among the top three quarterbacks in the Big 12. That’s comparing him to some big names that are in Heisman contention right now. With those two big names likely gone after this season, Ehlinger could return as the best quarterback in the Big 12 in 2019.
