Texas Football: 5 reasons the Longhorns will beat OU in the Big 12 Title Game
5. Old ghosts remain for the Sooners
Texas football has only two victories over Oklahoma since the 2015 season. One of those wins came under the direction of Herman, and the other under Charlie Strong. Texas seemed to claim wins in two year increments until it fell short against the eventual Heisman-winning quarterback, Baker Mayfield, last year.
As a true freshman, Sam Ehlinger couldn’t quite get the Horns far enough in the fourth quarter to get past Mayfield and the Sooners. Ehlinger led a spirited fourth quarter comeback against Oklahoma last year, but fell short by the final score of 29-24. Texas was able to get its revenge for that close loss earlier this year.
On Oct. 6, Oklahoma met up with the Horns for the annual meeting at the Texas State Fairgrounds at the Cotton Bowl to try and stay undefeated and extend its winning streak in this series to three games. The Oklahoma defense wound up being its biggest detriment again. Ehlinger and the Horns ran all over that defense to the tune of 48 points.
Past patterns could dictate future trends for Oklahoma, if it can’t get past the its only loss from the 2018 campaign thus far. Texas holds the all-time edge over Oklahoma and seems to be rising back to that level in the Big 12 once again. For Texas to reach the very top of the Big 12, it needs a second win over the Sooners this fall.
