Texas Football: 5 bowls that have biggest impact on Longhorns
5. Camping World Bowl
Matchup: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Syracuse Orange
Date: Dec. 28
Location: Orlando, FL
The only two non-New Year’s Six Bowls on this are more important to the entire picture of the Big 12, and the outlook for the conference slate for Texas football next year. The Camping World Bowl is a good example of how we could get a glimpse into a top tier team from the Big 12 in 2018 and what it could be like next year.
In this year’s Camping World Bowl, two top 25 teams will square off from the Big 12 and the ACC. From the Big 12, the West Virginia Mountaineers are going to try and knock off the upstart Syracuse Orange out of the ACC. Last year, the Camping World Bowl featured a win for the Big 12 as the Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Not only is the game important to the bigger picture for the Horns, since it lost to West Virginia in the regular season, but bowl games like this can help or hurt the Big 12’s image in a big way. Syracuse was one of the very best teams in the ACC this year, and surprised a lot of people. West Virginia can show that the ACC’s strength this year isn’t very apparent by beating them with its potent offense.
A huge storyline for this game is the absence of senior West Virginia quarterback Will Grier so that he can prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. The trend of college football players skipping their bowl games is becoming more and more frequent. This will also be the second year in a row where Grier is not playing in West Virginia’s postseason game.
