A huge loss could be looming for the Texas football program this off-season, with the potential transfer of quarterback Cameron Rising.

The transfer market definitely helped out this Texas football program last year, when it was able to bring in running back Tre Watson and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson as immediately eligible graduate transfers. Although, the detriment of the transfer market could be biting Texas football in the worst way. It is two way street in and out of the Forty Acres.

It would be nice if head coach Tom Herman and this Texas football program only had to worry about players making it onto the Forty Acres to make an impact each and every year. However, that’s just not how the changes in the transfer market work nowadays. Even some blue bloods that appear to be trending up, like Texas football, can be the victims of the transfer market.

Moreover, the area where the Texas Longhorns could be hurt this time is in the quarterback room. A seemingly bright future at quarterback could take a huge hit if the Horns lose freshman signal caller Cameron Rising.

The Twitter timeline of The Football Brainiacs first showed that Rising was a part of the NCAA Transfer Portal. That NCAA Transfer Portal essentially gives head coaches a list of potential targets during the off-season. It would be a shame if Rising made his way to the transfer market and explore other options this off-season.

For now, Texas football is set under center with sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger leading the way. However, Ehlinger could only be on campus until the end of the 2019 of 2020 season. Depending on whether he wants to declare for the NFL Draft, or play out the rest of his eligibility with this program, Ehlinger won’t be here forever.

Instead, the Horns had an outlet of quarterback potential that looked to be lined up well into the next decade. Rising seemed to be first up on the list of the next quarterbacks that could be set to make an impact. Beyond Rising, the Horns also had 2019 signee Roschon Johnson and 2020 commit Hudson Card lined up.

One decision that could be involved with the potential transfer of Rising was from Roschon Johnson enrolling early during the Early Signing Period. Johnson could have a leg up on the starting job after Ehlinger is done with his collegiate career. The way Hudson Card is showing out at the high school football level could also play a role in this decision from Rising.

Recent reports also showed that Herman had a conversation with Rising regarding his transfer decision, telling him to “sleep on it”. If a quarterback with as promising of a future as Rising with the Horns wants to leave the Texas football program, there could be some major questions coming about in the near future. This is a truly puzzling decision, but one that the fans will have to respect out of the talented first-year quarterback Rising.
