Of the best offensive tackles that are set for the Horns for the 2019 season, there’s very few that ever held a five-star classification during recruitment. Four-star Conroe, TX, offensive tackle Tyler Johnson was downgraded to a very highly-rated four-star prospect within the past few months but that doesn’t takeaway from what he brings to the Forty Acres for spring camp.

The competition from the incoming offensive linemen from this 2019 Texas football recruiting class could make for some fierce position battles over the course of the next two off-seasons. Texas football recruiting did a much better job adding depth at offensive tackle during this cycle than it did in 2018.

Offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand has a lot of talent coming his way to slot at offensive tackle. At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, the Oak Ridge High School product Johnson could be the best of the bunch. He has the best shot at starting by the time he’s in his second or third year on campus, and he could possibly get the chance to hit the field during his first year.

Johnson is set to join a group of key offensive linemen that includes rising redshirt sophomore Sam Cosmi, junior Derek Kerstetter, and senior Zach Shackelford. There’s three of the five starters from the 2018 team returning for the Horns in 2019, so there’s ample opportunity for Johnson to prove his worth starting as early as spring practice next month.
