The defensive side of the ball doesn’t have any pieces yet in the 2020 Texas football recruiting class. That could all change soon.

The offers are starting to pile up for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class prior to the National Signing Day on Feb. 6 that will round out the 2019 cycle. Any prospects that head Texas football coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando are looking to haul in for the 2020 class need to get attention and an offer very soon.

Since the 2020 recruiting cycle will hit center stage this off-season after National Signing Day on Feb. 6, any highly touted unoffered prospects are set to permanently turn their attention elsewhere. There’s prospects Texas football can jump on late, but that is usually part of a last-ditch effort to plug some holes in the recruiting class.

However, Texas football made sure to jump on four-star High Point, NC, Southwest Guildford High School defensive end Myles Murphy before it was too late. Murphy has a growing offer sheet that now encompasses more than 20 schools, including the Texas Longhorns.

Those more than 20 schools that offered Murphy will be no joke for competition for Texas football in his recruitment. The highlights of his 22 offers include the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, and Texas A&M Aggies.

This is yet again another recruitment that will feature the trio out of Texas and Oklahoma that includes the Horns, Aggies, and Sooners. But, those three schools have a battle set against some top programs out of the ACC and SEC. The North Carolina native Murphy has plenty of interest from top programs coming his way, so his decision could be difficult.

Moreover, a good amount of the offers Murphy received came since the turn of the calendar year. Half of the offers Murphy has as of Feb. 2 came in the month of January 2019. His Jan. 31 offer from Texas football was the last of those 11 offers in January too.

If Texas football wants to bring in a top 200 2020 high school prospect in the nation and the No. 10 strong-side defensive end for this cycle, it’ll have to make a big jump over programs like Alabama and Michigan. This is going to be a recruitment that will have nationwide attention and relevance geographically.

Moreover, this looks to be the type of prospect that could get a big bump in his recruiting ranking before National Signing Day 2020 locks down this cycle. He’s already seen a good jump in his recruiting ranking from Rivals and 247Sports within the past few months.

At 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, Murphy does have an ideal size that could make him a nice addition to any recruiting class. Defensive ends that can join a rotation in the front seven early in their collegiate career are very valuable in this day and age of college football. That’s what Murphy could provide for the Horns if that’s where he ultimately lands.
