Texas Football: Drew Mehringer America’s top recruiting assistant?
The honors started rolling in for Texas football passing game coordinator Drew Mehringer after his success on the recruiting trail for the 2019 cycle.
A recent list of the nation’s top recruiters among all the assistant coaches and recruiting coordinators from 247Sports had some intriguing placement for the Texas football program. That list of the nation’s top recruiters included a Texas football assistant coach Drew Mehringer near the very top.
Considering the way the 2019 Texas football recruiting class rounded things out on National Signing Day, on Feb. 6, this placement does seem warranted. Mehringer does a fantastic job especially at recruiting to his positions on the Texas football coaching staff.
The only assistant that was ranked higher on the 247Sports 2019 football recruiter rankings is the Tennessee Volunteers tight ends coach Brian Niedermayer. Texas football did pull in a higher rated 2019 recruiting class nationally, but Niedermayer did land some higher rated signees all-around. The highlight of the haul for that Tennessee assistant was five-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright. Tennessee hauled in Wright’s commitment on National Signing Day.
Moreover, the five recruits that Mehringer was responsible for out of the 2019 Texas football signing class were five wide receivers. The highlights of those wideouts included five-star California native Bru McCoy, five-star Cuero High School standout Jordan Whittington, and four-star Gatorade National High School Football Player of the Year Jake Smith.
Even some of the more underrated 2019 signees from Mehringer should provide solid depth in the receiving corps for Texas football moving forward. Three-star in-state wide receiver signee Kennedy Lewis is definitely an underrated player to watch, as he could find a similar path to success like former Texas football star Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
And, for his efforts on the recruiting trail for the 2019 cycle, Rivals named Mehringer the Recruiter of the Year. That is a big honor for a coach that pulled in one of the nation’s best wide receiver signing class for the 2019 recruiting cycle.
There’s no doubting the appeal that Mehringer has to recruits for this Texas football program. He is a very valuable part of the coaching staff, and a big reason why the Texas Longhorns landed the nation’s No. 3 2019 class (per 247Sports Team Composite Rankings).
Mehringer did do a great job on the recruiting trail for the 2018 Texas football recruiting class, but he really stepped up his game for this cycle. The highlight of that 2018 signing class for him was four-star wide receiver Brennan Eagles.
Moreover, he could get off to a fast start for the 2020 recruiting class, but he doesn’t have any commits as of yet. That is a pivotal test to see how many talented commits he can bring in for the Texas passing game for the upcoming seasons. At least for what he did in the 2019 recruiting cycle, you could very well credibly consider him the nation’s top recruiter.
