Texas Football: 5 Longhorns worth watching amid spring camp
Getting the quarterback depth chart set for spring camp is a very important task at hand for head Texas football coach Tom Herman. Rising redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Thompson should be the go-to option for the Horns behind rising junior star Sam Ehlinger. But, who’s to know if that sticks through summer workouts and fall camp.
There isn’t a looming position battle for the Horns at quarterback, but it is good to know who the backup will be for the upcoming season and how they stack up in spring drills and the spring football game. Thompson should be the set in stone backup signal caller for the Horns this year, but we should watch out for the four-star 2019 dual-threat quarterback signee Roschon Johnson.
If it comes down to it in spring camp, Johnson could move beyond Thompson on the quarterback depth chart. Neither has real game experience at the collegiate level, but Thompson has at least been around on the Forty Acres for one year. What Thompson has to show is that he made some type of progress during the 2018 campaign to be a worthy backup in case anything happens to Ehlinger.
The quarterback depth chart got so thin for the Horns in the first place because of the NCAA Transfer Portal claiming stake to two former signal callers this team had on the roster in 2018. Those two quarterbacks were redshirt junior Shane Buechele (committed to SMU Mustangs) and redshirt freshman Cameron Rising (committed to Utah Utes).
