The elite lineage that Texas football recruiting is putting together at the safety position is something that can be continued through the 2020 cycle. Dating back to the 2018 signing class for the Longhorns, safety was a staple of a handful of recruiting cycles that pushed some players that made an instant impact for this program.

In 2018, it was the true freshman safety duo of B.J. Foster and Caden Sterns that powered this secondary on the field and drove the top three national class ranking. The following cycle saw the recently bumped up five-star in-state safety signee Tyler Owens that carried the loaded for the 2019 signing class and helped power Texas to a second consecutive top three national ranking.

Since the 2020 recruiting class for the Horns doesn’t have any commits in store yet at safety, the first up could be four-star Shadow Creek High School and Pearland, TX, standout Xavion Alford. As the nation’s No. 13 safety and a top 200 2020 high school prospect overall, Alford could be a big initial add for this recruiting cycle on the defensive side of the ball.

After he was already on campus once on the Forty Acres for Junior Day last month, having Alford back so soon should be a big indication of his interest in the Horns. The Texas coaching staff needs to jump on his recruitment and continue to build the bond with him. But, Alford is not the only safety target that is big for the Horns in March.
