New faces/Jordan Whittington in the backfield

It seems like an interesting idea to give someone like five-star Cuero, TX, early enrollee wide receiver Jordan Whittington this different of a role in his first year on the Forty Acres. Putting Whittington in the backfield next to junior signal caller Sam Ehlinger could actually work out pretty well, though.

In the Texas High School State Title Game this past season, Whittington showed that he could do it all by winning the MVP honors for both sides of the ball while amassing seven total touchdowns. There really couldn’t be a more versatile and proven freshman in that regard than Whittington.

This would by no means be a permanent fix for the Horns, but Whittington could be a nice change of pace for the ground game. Keeping the offense balanced is the name of the game for Beck and Herman, and Whittington’s presence will help to achieve that this year.

Giving Whittington or someone like the elusive and reliable four-star Arizona native wideout Jake Smith some different looks in the backfield a few times per game could pay dividends. This is the benefit Herman gets with such a prominent wide receiver haul, thanks to assistant Drew Mehringer, from the 2019 signing class.
