5. Iowa State Cyclones

National Class Ranking: 38

The 2020 recruiting class for the Iowa State Cyclones really took off at the end of last month. Iowa State mostly jumped Texas football from pure numbers of commits over the quality of each prospect.

Not to say that Iowa State has no talent in their recruiting class, but the average ranking of each commit isn’t near as high as it is for the Longhorns. Iowa State did land commits at the end of last month from a representative at the Elite 11 last weekend with three-star dual-threat quarterback Hunter Dekkers and three-star strong-side defensive end Johnny Wilson.

Since the Clones have not landed a single commitment from a four-star recruit, it could just take another pledge or two for Texas to jump back ahead. Iowa State currently holds 13 commitments. Of those 13, 12 came from three-stars and one came from a two-star prospect.

There also isn’t as much entanglement between Texas and Iowa State in terms of the prospects they’re each pursuing as most other schools in the Big 12. This is a fairly straightforward path for the Longhorns to get back ahead in the conference rankings. A pledge from four-star edge rusher Prince Dorbah could do just that.
