Texas Football: Two-deep 2019 offensive depth chart
Running Back Starter: Keaontay Ingram, Sophomore
The backups at a lot of the skill positions for this Texas football offense are going to be very young and inexperienced. In the case of the running back room, even the Longhorns starter is going to be young by eligibility. But there might not be a more pivotal sophomore on this offense health-wise than Keaontay Ingram.
This is a prime year for Ingram to take the next step in his development to become an All-Big 12-caliber running back. He’ll surely be competing with a good crop of running backs in the Big 12 this fall, including Oklahoma’s Kennedy Brooks and Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard. When it’s wrapped up this fall, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ingram is a clear top two running back in this conference.
Backup: Jordan Whittington, Freshman
The former five-star Cuero, TX, wide receiver recruit turned running back Jordan Whittington is going to get a pretty heavy workload during his true freshman campaign. The point for Herman to convert him to running back was to take advantage of his versatility and get him the ball in numerous different offensive packages and looks.
However, holding up at running back will be important for Whittington. He did line up in the backfield at times with Cuero High School but he was never a permanent running back solution there. If anything happens to Ingram this year, Whittington could be thrust into a starting role sooner than expected.
