5. Weird need to stay relevant while jumping ship from the Big 12 to the SEC

Two programs that jumped ship from the Big 12 ahead of the 2012 college football season had to partly be because of the impact this Texas football program had. The power trip that the Aggies, Longhorns, and Nebraska Cornhuskers fought for back in the day in the Big 12 could’ve played a role in the ultimate split up of four teams in the conference around seven years ago.

Nebraska bolted for the Big Ten, the Colorado Buffaloes went to the PAC-12, and the Mizzou Tigers and Texas A&M went to the SEC. The interesting part about the shift for Mizzou and Texas A&M to the SEC was the various divisions they fell into. Mizzou went into the SEC East (while it is neither in the east or the southern part of the United States) and Texas A&M went into the SEC West.

Texas A&M landing in the SEC West made a little bit more sense than Mizzou going to the SEC East but both were annoying since it brought the Big 12 down to 10 teams. But the funny part for the Aggies landing in the SEC along with Mizzou is the fact that the latter remained much more relevant in conference title contention than the former.

Mizzou already won the SEC East twice since it left the Big 12. Texas A&M hasn’t even sniffed an SEC Championship Game/SEC West division crown. Mediocrity was the name of the game for the Aggies under former head coach Kevin Sumlin and current head coach Jimbo Fisher in the SEC West standings. Feeling like they are superior to the Longhorns since they play in the SEC West is just flat out wrong for the Aggies.
