A player that is one of the more hated Oklahoma Sooners in recent years to fans of the Texas football program is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and the 2019 NFL Draft first overall pick, quarterback Kyler Murray. Missing on Kyler was made even worse in 2015 and 2016 for Texas due to the long-standing quarterback troubles.

The Red River Showdown did see the Longhorns top Kyler and the Sooners. But Kyler then got the best of the Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship Game. The battles between then star sophomore Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger and Kyler in the two Texas-Oklahoma games last season will go down as very memorable throughout each program’s history.

Arguing that Texas should’ve landed Kyler over the Oklahoma or the Texas A&M Aggies could be a hard sell for this fan base. But the raw talent level that Kyler brought to the table became apparent under the offensive genius and Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley.

However, Murray looked to have a split decision between Texas and Texas A&M when he was a five-star dual-threat quarterback coming out of Allen High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex during the 2015 recruiting cycle. Texas was one of the last programs cut before he committed to Texas A&M, though.
