Once again, it can be difficult for Texas football fans to swallow their pride and face it that a rival program landed a blue chip prospect they were pursuing. The former five-star offensive tackle recruit Jake Matthews stuck around in the NFL for a long time now, but didn’t turn out as scouts and the national media expected him to until this past season.

It was roughly a decade ago that Matthews choose to take his talents to Texas A&M. He even got to play in a few games against Texas in the Lone Star Showdown. That’s not something that many other recruits during this time frame could say that played for the Aggies.

However, Matthews did narrow down his final commitment decision to Texas A&M and the USC Trojans. Texas was included among his five or eight finalist schools, but didn’t make it through the final cut down to two back in the summer of 2009.

Matthews did wind up as the No. 6 overall pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2014 NFL Draft. He is still on the Falcons roster entering the 2019 regular season. But he found a new level of play with the Falcons last season, when he was named to his first Pro Bowl roster during his short NFL career.
