5. Baylor Bears

The Baylor Bears present one of the more intriguing cases in the Big 12 to make a big rise up the conference standings. Third-year former Temple Owls head coach Matt Rhule had interest coming from the NFL within the past two years, but looks to really be building this Baylor football program up in the right direction.

The most important player that the Baylor offense brings back in 2019 is rising junior quarterback Charlie Brewer. Last season, Brewer had a breakthrough sophomore campaign by leading Baylor to a bowl game and racking up more than 3,000 passing yards and 26 total touchdowns.

Brewer will be flanked by a group of skill position players that are amid the most experienced and deep in the Big 12. That group of skill position players is highlighted by rising senior running back JaMycal Hasty, senior wide receiver Denzel Mims, and redshirt senior wide receiver Chris Platt.

Last year, Baylor’s offense ranked at No. 22 in the nation in yards per game with 459. Baylor also did well to score slightly over 29 points per game. That’s just not enough in the Big 12 when Rhule’s defense gave up so many big plays. Baylor will rely more on the defense to reach that next level in the Big 12 than the offense. But Texas football will have a challenging test when they travel to Waco to take on the Bears.
