Texas Football: 5 bold predictions for Longhorns fall camp
5. BJ Foster looks like the best defensive back
Head Texas football coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando will never have put together a nickelback depth chart as potent as what they have for the 2019 campaign. Former five-star safety recruit B.J. Foster will spearhead a group of potential nickelbacks that could keep this position thriving for a long while.
Foster was a beast for the Longhorns secondary last season, but got spotty playing time in the secondary. Foster even lined up at linebacker at times for Orlando last season. While doing that, Foster managed 46 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, 5 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles.
Behind Foster on the nickelback depth chart could sit junior Josh Thompson. A group of defensive backs that includes a pair of former four-star recruits Thompson and Chris Brown could be quality starters in waiting. Whenever the Longhorns were struggling with health in the secondary in spring ball and fall camp, Thompson and Brown did well getting first team reps.
But the transition to nickelback combined with the numbers that Foster posted last season show that he could be a breakout star this fall. Thus far, Foster is showing out in fall camp and making strides ahead of his time. A sophomore slump looks to be nowhere in the near future for Foster.
