Texas Basketball: 2010’s All-Decade Longhorns Team
Small forward: Damion James (2006-2010)
Numbers just during senior season: 18.0 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.7 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 28.8 PER, 6.5 WS
The former All-Big 12 Tournament Team member and three-time All-Big 12 honoree Damion James was a sensational wing for the Texas basketball program over the course of four seasons. He might be the most valuable Longhorn basketball player on this list for the current decade if he were to play more than one season that fits into this criteria.
But the impact he had during his senior season, on that talented 2009-10 team, also counts for something extra here. He was an All-Big 12 First-Team selection for his solid senior season, and he was a Wooden Award Finalist. Averaging a double-double per game, like he did as a senior, made him extremely difficult to deal with for any opposing wing defender.
Potentially the most impressive part about James’ stat line from his senior season is the fact that he also averaged 1.7 steals per game to go along with 1.2 blocks. For the amount of starts he had as a senior, in all of 34 games played, he had a solid 28.8 player efficiency rating that ranked second in the Big 12. He also sits in the top 25 in Big 12 hoops history in total blocks (163 for his career).
James is 0.1 win shares off of having the most by any Longhorns player in any individual season in the last decade. He sits behind Hamilton in that regard.
In the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected James at No. 24 overall. His draft rights were later sent to the New Jersey Nets. He played in mix games with the Nets over the course of two seasons. He then played in just five games with the San Antonio Spurs during the 2013-14 NBA season.
