5. Chip Long

Current Position: N/A (Former Notre Dame OC)

If the Texas football program is to target departed offensive coordinators to fill their void on the coaching staff, then look no further than the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish play-caller Chip Long. Head coach Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish decided to not retain Long after the 2019 regular season concluded.

A Notre Dame team that had expectations of making another run to the College Football Playoff in 2019 fell short. A drubbing in terrible conditions on the road at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines pretty much doomed the College Football Playoff chances of Notre Dame to get in for a second straight year.

Nonetheless, Notre Dame still had a pretty good offense that ranked among the top 30 in the nation in terms of offensive efficiency. Notre Dame was guided by junior quarterback Ian Book, who had a solid regular season while posting 2,792 passing yards and 37 total touchdowns, with just six interceptions.

Notre Dame also ranked at No. 13 in the nation in terms of points per game (37.1). They had a high-flying offense at times, that didn’t turn the ball over all that much. A steady offense that is easy to grasp might be a good scheme to get on board with for Herman and the Longhorns. At 36-years-old, the former Memphis Tigers and Arizona State Sun Devils assistant coach could still have a good development path to become a top coordinator in college football.
