3. Positional need in the 2020 recruiting class

Making an immediate impact is always going to be a discussion during the Early Signing Period and National Signing Day when you’re landing as many blue chip prospects as the Texas football program does under Herman. Landing Collins would bring yet another recruit capable of making an impact in his second or third year on campus into the mix.

And the group that Texas has along the defensive line in the 2020 recruiting class right now is pretty thin. Thanks to decommitments from the likes of four-star Manor strong-side defensive end Princely Umanmielen and four-star Corner Canyon strong-side defensive end Van Fillinger, Texas only has two true defensive linemen commits in the 2020 recruiting class.

Those two commitments came from three-star former Oklahoma State Cowboys commit, and Longview defensive tackle, Sawyer Goram-Welch and four-star Cy Ridge defensive tackle Vernon Broughton. Texas could really use the addition of another defensive lineman in this recruiting class, especially at defensive end.

The firing of former Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando did a lot to cause the decommitment of so many 2020 and 2021 prospects. But there should be more stabilization in those recruiting classes for the Longhorns now that both coordinator positions are filled (assuming the hiring of Ohio State Buckeyes passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich as the next Texas offensive coordinator follows through).
