Texas Football: 4 overreactions from Alamo Bowl win over Utah
4. Texas has the brightest future of any backfield in the Big 12
The way that the Texas football program saw their running backs rise to the occasion in the final two games of the season was nothing short of tremendous. True freshman former converted quarterback Roschon Johnson posted more than 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the regular season finale against Texas Tech.
And sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram had a huge day in the Alamo Bowl by racking up more than 120 total yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Ingram nearly amassed a 1,000-rushing yard season during his sophomore campaign too. But it was best for the Longhorns to work with a two-headed monster coming out of the backfield this year.
Roschon and Keaontay were beasts for the Longhorns this season, nearly amassing 2,000 total yards from scrimmage between the two of them. The future is even brighter when you look ahead to the addition of the five-star Salpointe Catholic and Arizona native running back signee Bijan Robinson.
Johnson didn’t play as big of a role in the success of the Texas ground game in the Alamo Bowl as Ingram did. But they generally came up big in different weeks which worked out pretty well to help balance out this offense in times of need.
If the Bulls get this type of play out of the running backs next season like they did in the final two games of the 2019 season, then it could be a special year for this rushing attack.
