3. Help Sam Ehlinger reach Heisman contention in 2020

With the announcement that the to-be senior Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger would be returning to Austin for his last year of eligibility, the expectations remained firm for this team in 2020. Ehlinger had yet another record-breaking season in 2019, where he posted 39 total touchdowns and single-digit interceptions.

The 6-foot-3 and 230 pound signal caller should return as one of the most hyped up Heisman contenders coming out of the Big 12. He could very well be the best returning quarterback in the Big 12 too, with the departure of the former Alabama graduate transfer Jalen Hurts from the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason.

But we can’t overlook the fact that the Longhorns had a true Heisman contender, or at least he was hyped up to be heading into the regular season, in 2019. Ehlinger was considered one of the 10 best Heisman contenders heading into the 2019 campaign. The Longhorns were coming off a true high-note from the 2018 campaign after making an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game and beating the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.

If Ehlinger can get around the mark of 50 total touchdowns, while keeping his interception numbers in single-digits, then he will likely find himself to be a Heisman finalist in 2020. Ehlinger would be the first Heisman finalist to make an appearance in New York City for the Longhorns since Colt McCoy more than 10 years ago.

Before McCoy, the last Longhorns Heisman finalist was legendary quarterback Vince Young back in 2005.
