3. Texas State Bobcats

Scheduled Year: 2026

Who knows where both the Texas football program and Texas State will be come the 2026 season. Could Herman still be the head coach of the Longhorns?

Sure.

But it is less likely that the former West Virginia Mountaineers offensive coordinator Jake Spavital is still the head coach of the Bobcats. Spavital led Texas State to a record of 3-9, but they were 3-3 at home. Even though that is a less than stellar record, it is actual an improvement from their last three years.

These in-state matchups against Group of Five programs always make for interesting storylines. Texas tends to face other Group of Five teams out of the state of Texas commonly, hence taking on the Rice Owls during the 2019 non-conference slate. The Longhorns tend not to face FCS programs during their regular season schedules.

Texas State also reportedly made moves on Jan. 23 to add other programs to round out non-conference schedules through the 2031 season. They extended their series with the in-state foe UTSA Roadrunners through 2031, and also added FCS Incarnate Word to the 2021 schedule. But the most significant move Texas State made on this day was adding the Longhorns in 2025.

Gazing into the future of Texas State is difficult since they don’t have a single commitment hauled in for their 2021 or 2022 recruiting classes.
