2. Getting a realistic shot at conference and national title contention

Texas football returns about its best team since head coach Tom Herman took the reigns ahead of the 2017 season. It took one year for Herman to build up the Longhorns, and then he made a real run at the Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff in 2018. Last season, Texas took a bit of a step back but there was still hope heading into the 2020 offseason.

Texas wrapped up the 2019 campaign with a record of 8-5 (5-4 Big 12) including an impressive win in the Alamo Bowl over the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes by the final score of 38-10. Utah was the best win that Texas notched in 2019, but at least this team heads into the offseason with momentum.

However, the Longhorns bring back a lot of starting experience and a talented 2020 recruiting class that has some names that could make an immediate impact. Among those names are five-star Salpointe Catholic running back (top at the nation at his position) Bijan Robinson and four-star Highland Park outside linbacker/edge rusher Prince Dorbah.

Black could be going from one program that did have a legitimate shot at Big Ten Championship contention over the course of the last two years to one in the Longhorns that could win it all in the Big 12 in 2020. Texas is pretty much a unanimous preseason top 25 program in the way-too-early rankings in almost any source you look at.
