Texas Football: 3 reasons WR Tarik Black should choose Longhorns
1. Volume of passing attempts/efficiency Texas brings
Compared to the other programs that seem to be on the top of Black’s mind, the Texas football program boasts one of the best offenses that he could land with. Not only do the Longhorns return Ehlinger for the 2020 season, they bring back a level of efficiency in their passing offense that is hard to match by any of Black’s other finalist schools.
Texas ranked among the top 20 FBS programs last year in total passing attempts (470), yards per game (289), and in the top 30 in passer rating (150.1). Miami, Boston College, Arizona State, and Virginia didn’t come close to matching those numbers. Virginia came the closest.
The big-bodied frame of Black and the ability to be physical and high-point the ball since he came out of high school could make for a very appealing connection with the Longhorns passing game.
What Texas also has the edge on over the likes of Virginia and Miami (who are about the next two best projected teams on Black’s finalist list of schools) is the returning quarterback. Miami loses the former freshman sensation starting quarterback Jarren Williams to the transfer portal. Diaz and the Canes do get former Houston Cougars quarterback D’Eriq King, but he’ll be a new addition to that offense.
Texas brings that stability to the table of returning one of the nation’s very best quarterbacks, and a true Heisman contender in 2020, like Ehlinger. That’s something that none of the other potential landing spots mentioned for Black possess. Ehlinger is a record-breaking Texas quarterback that has more than 65 total scores over the last two seasons and just 15 interceptions combined.
