How the rest of the quarterback room stacks up

Losses

Since the beginning of the 2019 offseason, a host of former Texas football players wound up leaving this quarterback room for what they felt would be better opportunities elsewhere. Former Longhorn Shane Buechele will be entering his redshirt senior season with the SMU Mustangs this year and redshirt Cameron Rising could be competing for the starting job with the Utah Utes.

The only name that will emerge as a new entrant into the NCAA Transfer Portal is former Texas walk-on quarterback Sam Saxton. In 2020, Saxton will be taking his talents from Texas to Stephen F. Austin.

Ja’Quinden Jackson, Freshman

The one name on this list that might not even play quarterback this season is the former four-star Duncanville dual-threat signal caller/athlete recruit Ja’Quinden Jackson. The 6-foot-2 and 220 pound Jackson is as polarizing as it gets in this quarterback room, though. He would likely be the fourth string if he were to play quarterback this fall.

Hudson Card, Freshman

Possibly the future quarterback for the Longhorns, former four-star Lake Travis dual-threat signal caller recruit Hudson Card was a huge get in the 2020 class. Card enrolled early on the Forty Acres and could get some early playing time if Herman and newly hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich utilize that four-game redshirt rule.
