3. Texas Tech’s shot at revenge

With the loss for the Texas basketball program to Oklahoma State on March 7, they moved into a four-way tie in the Big 12 standings ahead of the start of the conference tournament. The Longhorns still landed a team that will be seeking out revenge on March 12, as head coach Chris Beard and Texas Tech will get them in the first round.

Oklahoma and West Virginia were the other two teams that finished up conference play with a record of 9-9. Head coach Lon Kruger and the Sooners got the three seed and the Mountaineers got the six seed.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma State got the eight seed and will play in that preliminary round against the nine seed Iowa State Cyclones. March 11 will be the first day of the Big 12 Tournament, which will features Oklahoma State-Iowa State and the seven seed TCU Horned Frogs against the 10 seed Kansas State Wildcats.

Texas Tech finished up their regular season with a difficult meeting with the No. 1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, and the result didn’t fall in their favor. The loss to Kansas moved Texas Tech to a record of 18-13 (9-9 Big 12) heading into the Big 12 Tournament.

Texas managed to either split the season series or outright sweep each of the teams that didn’t finish with a winning record in conference play. Texas Tech is one of those teams that the Longhorns took down during their five-game winning streak near the end of the regular season, and the defending national title runner-up team in college basketball will surely be motivated for this first round affair.
