An option for the Texas football program to look into during the 2020 offseason in the transfer portal if they’re going to take on a quarterback is one that can be very multiple. The Longhorns could look into a quarterback that could be as versatile as someone like the former four-star dual-threat recruit Roschon Johnson to fill a depth need.

Roschon was converted to running back and stood out for the Texas offense last season. But Herman looks to be moving him back to quarterback in spring camp this year since running back is deeper than it was last season. This all shows how Herman likes to run his program and the types of skill sets that he is looking for.

With that in mind, a good place for the Longhorns to look for a potential quarterback transfer candidate is someone like the Iowa State Cyclones former three-star recruit and “Last Chance U” star Re-al Mitchell. During his first year getting actual playing time in Ames, Mitchell didn’t have any passing attempts. But he did have slightly over 100 total yards from scrimmage and one touchdown in five games played.

Mitchell played did play in more than four games, but he already used up his redshirt year. If he was to earn immediate eligibility at his next landing spot, then Mitchell would be a redshirt sophomore entering the 2020 season.

In the case of what he could do for the Texas football program, the polarizing Mitchell could provide a change of pace and get the ball all over the place off the line of scrimmage alongside to-be senior Sam Ehlinger. He could be an intriguing fit for Texas, if there’s a valid use under recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.
