Texas Football: 3 Horns you forgot played with Vince Young
Now we’re really starting to dig deep to find a decent contributor for the Longhorns in the 2000’s that got to play on a few of the same teams with VY. Turning to the other side of the ball, former Texas safety Matt Melton didn’t have a very comprehensive career stat line, but he was important at times for this team nonetheless.
Melton was present for each of the three seasons while VY played on the Forty Acres. He joined the Longhorns as part of their 2002 recruiting class, as a three-star John Tyler High School safety out of Tyler, TX. He also had interest coming from the likes of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Arizona Wildcats, Purdue Boilermakers, and Texas A&M, among others.
The career production for Melton would tally up just shy of 30 total tackles. But he did have one key interception during the 2006 season, and a key fumble recovery during the 2003 season. Two of his three turnovers were taken back for touchdowns. He had two fumble recoveries and one pick in his college career.
That interception return for a touchdown would come in one of the few games where he would make a tangible impact in 2003, in an eventual win over former head coach Les Miles and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. And he would also have an interception returned for a touchdown and a fumble recovery in one game against Baylor in 2006.
