Texas Football: 3 reasons why the Colts should draft Devin Duvernay
2. Playing alongside a veteran supporting cast
The addition of Rivers to the Colts roster earlier in the offseason gives the offense one more shot to help this veteran signal caller get a Super Bowl ring. Rivers is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks of the better part of the last two decades in the NFL. But he is the only of three quarterbacks out of the 2004 NFL Draft class that isn’t loaded with postseason accolades.
Other 2004 quarterback draftees like retired New York Giant Eli Manning and Pittsburgh Steelers veteran Ben Roethlisberger have two Super Bowl rings each way. Rivers’ stat line over the course of his roughly 15-year long NFL career is just as impressive if not better than those other two signal callers from the same draft class.
The Colts built a good supporting cast for Brissett and retired former Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck in the last three years. It was just too late for Luck to recover from a number of injuries he suffered throughout the early years of his NFL career. The Colts didn’t give him the necessary protection to hold up in the pocket year-over-year.
On the offensive side of the ball alone, Duvernay would be able to learn under a number of accomplished veterans with the Colts. The Colts have veterans such as Rivers, Hilton, offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo, and tight end Jack Doyle, that could help his development at the next level and find success earlier in his career.
