The Jacksonville Jaguars got nothing short of an absolute steal in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by selecting former Longhorns 6-foot-6 and 220 pound lengthy wide receiver Collin Johnson. Two big reasons why Johnson slid as far down draft boards as he did were injuries and a very deep wide receiver class.

Spending much of his senior campaign on the sideline dealing with lingering lower-body injuries, Johnson didn’t get to show his full promise when it could’ve been the most effective. Johnson was coming off a solid junior season where he was 15-receiving yards short of 1,000. He registered 188 career catches, 2,624 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns.

Johnson is going to be able to be a prototypical outside possession receiver for the Jaguars offense. Former Washington State Cougars quarterback and 2018 Heisman contender Gardner Minshew will be happy to get this new target in the mix. Johnson and former Colorado Buffaloes star Laviska Shenault Jr. highlighted this Jaguars draft class at wideout.

Nonetheless, Johnson will likely still be sitting behind the likes of D.J. Chark, Dede Westbrook, Chris Conley, and Shenault in this wideout pecking order during his rookie season. The unique but usually highly sought after skill set that the towering Johnson brings to the table might be better served elsewhere, and with a better team as it stands now.
