Backups

Kenyatta Watson II, Redshirt Freshman

The corner that has the most long-term potential of all the top four options as it stands now on the projected depth chart is to-be redshirt freshman former four-star recruit and Georgia native Kenyatta Watson II. Last season, Watson II kept his eligibility for four more years by only playing in three games. He registered just three total tackles in that span of games, though.

As the most highly touted signee from the 2019 Texas recruiting class, Watson II is a breakthrough waiting to happen. If he slots as the third cornerback on the depth chart, then he’ll finally get his shot to make a real impact in pass coverage. This 6-foot-1 and 195 pound capable playmaker is also a great fit in Ash’s scheme given his gifted physical tools and quick ability to read the quarterback’s eyes.

Josh Thompson, Redshirt Junior

A significant position change enacted by the Longhorns in what was supposed to be spring camp was moving former safety Josh Thompson to cornerback. Thompson missed the entirety of his junior season due to a broken foot that he originally suffered in the Sep. 21 win at home over the Oklahoma State Cowboys (Texas’ Big 12 opener).

What Thompson brings to the table this year is 46 career total tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass deflections. The peak of his production came during the 2018 season (his sophomore campaign), when he played in 10 games. He’ll look to make an impact now during his redshirt junior season purely as a cornerback. Thompson is one of the most experienced cornerbacks Texas has this year.
