Tight end is a challenging position for the Longhorns to hang onto in the 2021 recruiting class. First, it was a decommitment from hometown Lake Travis tight end product Lake McRee back in February of this year that dropped one off from the position for the Longhorns. And then this month, three-star Atascocita product Landen King became the second tight end decommitment in a matter of months for Texas.

Since the eligibility of rising senior tight end Cade Brewer is about to run up, Herman and the Longhorns need to find the next answer at the position beyond the likes of Jared Wiley and Brayden Liebrock, among others. Texas has already had two tight end decommitments, and even one wide receiver pledge lost in the 2021 class.

A good place to look next for Herman and the Longhorns could be three-star 6-foot-3 and 230 pound Dekaney tight end Var’Keyes Gumms. This vastly underrated versatile tight end out of the fertile recruiting grounds of Houston, TX, only holds offers from seven schools at this point in time. But that number of schools on his offer sheet could grow in the near future.

The seven schools currently on Gumms’ offer sheet are the Utah State Aggies, Houston Cougars, LSU Tigers, Tulsa Golden Hurricane, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, and Grambling and Prairie View A&M out of the FCS.

Gumms ranks as the nation’s No. 710 2021 high school prospect, No. 33 tight end, and No. 96 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). If he continues to improve at the rate that he has from his freshman through junior seasons in high school, then Gumms could become the next tight end prospect that Texas should be sending an offer out to.
