Texas Football: Impact of landing two recent 4-Star 2021 DB commits
Rounding it up
Now that the Longhorns 2021 class has two of their initial defensive back commitments, it is starting to round out more evenly on both sides of the ball. Texas got a much needed injection of depth in a key spot, given all the changes to coaching staff and resulting adaptions in defensive scheme this offseason.
Adding Coffey to the class makes yet another highly touted four or five-star safety that the Longhorns bring into the mix. In the 2020 signing class, Texas landed four-star safeties Jerrin Thompson and Xavion Alford (both who ranked among the top 200 2020 high school prospects in the nation). In 2018 and 2019, five-star safeties Tyler Owens, Caden Sterns, and B.J. Foster were all signed.
Landing Ibraheem was much more critical to the Longhorns fortunes in adding depth to the defensive backfield, though. This makes the second big-time get at the cornerback position in the last two months, either with the 2020 or 2021 class. Four-star former Baylor commit Jahdae Barron recently joined the Longhorns. Ibraheem is the next highly touted corner to do so.
Where can Texas look next to add to the defensive backfield? There’s not an overwhelming abundance of highly touted defensive back targets left uncommitted for the Longhorns. A few names to look into includes four-star LBJ safety Andrew Mukuba and three-star Manor safety Devin Lemear.
