Texas Football: 3 best CB Anthony Cook transfer landing spots
3. Houston Cougars
The inaugural season at the helm for the former West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen with the Houston Cougars football program did not go as planned. Holgorsen jumping to a Group of Five program after a relatively successful stint in Morgantown was one of the more surprising moves from the coaching carousel during the 2019 offseason.
However, Houston wound up finishing up with a record of just 4-8 (2-6 AAC) last season. It did not help that the Cougars lost the services of star quarterback D’Eriq King (now with the Miami Hurricanes), who put his name in the transfer portal after just four games played. King was the spark plug to the bulk of Houston’s success in the American Athletic Conference during the 2018 campaign.
Houston was also one of the less proficient pass defenses in the AAC last season. They allowed nearly 290 passing yards per game last season (actually similar to that of the Longhorns) to go along with a completion percentage above 61.0 and around 2.5 passing touchdowns.
While there are some of the more productive defensive backs from the 2019 Houston team returning this fall, they weren’t the most efficient on a national scale. Cook should be able to compete with the likes of rising senior safety and former Ole Miss Rebel Deontay Anderson and rising junior corner Shaun Lewis this year, if he were to land at Houston.
The Cougars were one of the Group of Five programs on the recruitment of Cook early in his days out of Lamar High School. It is also in his hometown. He could join up with fellow former Longhorn and running back Kyle Porter at Houston in a move that would make a lot of sense.
