Texas Football: 3 updated defensive transfer portal targets
The most recent big time target that could be the gem find in the transfer portal for the Longhorns is former LSU rising sophomore safety/linebacker and ex-five-star recruit Marcel Brooks. LSU could be losing a good one in Brooks, and it puts the defending National Champions and head coach Ed Orgeron in a tough spot.
But it’s not all that surprising that a name like Brooks’ shows up in the transfer portal after the roller coaster ride of an offseason that LSU had thus far. Former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda left Baton Rouge to become the next Baylor Bears head coach, replacing Matt Rhule who took over with the Carolina Panthers in the same role.
As the only name on this list that had a Texas scholarship offer coming out of Flower Mound Marcus High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Brooks should be a focal point of the coaching staff in the portal right now. He ranked as the nation’s No. 32 2019 high school prospect, No. 2 outside linebacker, and No. 5 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
In his one year playing for LSU, Brooks played in six games where he registered some type of production. And he played in 11 games overall (some with various special teams contributions). But he registered eight total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks, in the six games that he racked up some type of production.
There might not be a single other name in the portal at this point in time that could be more potent for Texas to snag heading into the 2020 season.
