Texas Football: Tom Herman undergoes successful shoulder surgery
Texas football head coach Tom Herman was the member of the Longhorns this week involved in the injury news cycle, after his shoulder surgery.
Since the mandatory summer workouts ramped back up for the Texas football program, an anticipated storyline involved what’s happening with various player’s healthy and any key injury updates along the way. But for the most part, the Longhorns were a clean bill of health (outside of any positive tests for the novel coronavirus in the last couple of months). Texas underwent a large rash of injury problems during the 2019 regular season, and even had some in winter workouts this offseason.
An area where most wouldn’t expect to get an injury and/or surgery update is with a program’s seemingly otherwise healthy and young head coach. But the Longhorns head coach Tom Herman did just recently undergo a successful shoulder procedure that stemmed from damage back from his football playing days.
The surgery reportedly occurred earlier this month for Herman and is one of many that stemmed from upper-body injuries and damaged sustained during his college football playing days. Herman played his college ball at Cal Lutheran, at the wide receiver position, from 1994-1997. He was an all-conference wideout at his peak.
And Herman is famous from his college football playing days for being the roommate of former Cal Lutheran linebacker and current Baylor Bears head coach Dave Aranda. The newly hired Baylor head coach and former LSU Tigers defensive coordinator Aranda is also one of multiple Power Five and NFL football coaches to come out of Cal Lutheran along with Herman.
Moreover, apparently Herman has undergone more than a dozen knee injuries since the end of his football playing days. And the most recent prior surgery that Herman underwent before this shoulder procedure was back in 2016 on his left labrum.
Herman was spotted at a recent high school football and coaching clinic in a sling after the surgery. But all appears to be going well for him pertaining to this shoulder surgery since it happened.
Texas is supposed to open up the 2020 season on Sep. 5 at home against the South Florida Bulls if all goes as planned in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Herman is set to enter his fourth-year as the Longhorns head football coach this fall.
