Texas Football: Impact landing 3-Star TE Gunnar Helm brings for Longhorns
Where he fits in on the current roster?
With a lot of roster shuffling occurring over the course of the last two years at the tight end position for the Longhorns, adding more depth in this spot is always going to help. Texas made the move earlier the offseason to switch the former three-star tight end recruit Jared Wiley to the defensive side of the ball.
Last offseaosn, Texas moved the former four-star athlete recruit Malcolm Epps from tight end to wide receiver. And this offseason, Epps wound up getting move back to his original position, after head coach Tom Herman moved the former elite five-star recruit Jordan Whittington back to his original position at wide receiver.
However, with Epps at tight end and Wiley likely on the defensive side of the ball for the rest of the season at a bare minimum, Helm could have an opportunity to make an impact by his second or third year on campus. He will have to fight for playing time behind the likes of the Arizona native and former four-star tight end recruit Brayden Liebrock.
But the good news for Helm and his shot at early playing time is that rising senior projected starting tight end Cade Brewer will run out of eligibility at the end of this season. Helm will join a tight end room that does have some opportunity to make early headway, which likely played a role in his recruitment in the first place.
