The top two

The same combination that led the Longhorns out of the backfield last season should be the top two coming into the 2020 campaign. These two are by far the most proven in terms of recent production and brings the most stability to the table for the ground game (something Texas didn’t have a whole lot the last couple of seasons).

2. Roschon Johnson, Sophomore

It will be interesting to follow how the game of the former converted dual-threat quarterback Roschon Johnson develops at the running back position this fall. As a true freshman, Johnson was a stud. He registered more than 800 total yards from scrimmage, eight total touchdowns, and did all that while averaging well over five yards per carry.

The challenge for Johnson this year will be continuing to improve whilst the competition got carries increases with Bijan now in the fold. He’s got an aptitude for blocking and thriving in the receiving game from his knowledge and ability as a quarterback. And he showed a lot of natural ability as a running back last year.

1. Keaontay Ingram, Senior

And now we’ve finally arrived at the top of the running back depth chart for the Longhorns for the 2020 season. At the very top of it is about the most proven running back to land on the Forty Acres since D’Onta Foreman, with rising junior and Carthage, TX, native Keaontay Ingram.

As was true heading into the 2019 season, the biggest hurdle it seems for Ingram this year will he staying healthy on a regular basis. Lower-body injuries were a lingering issue for Ingram in his first two years with the program, and he’s already dealing with a hamstring injury in mandatory summer workouts.

Nonetheless, that shouldn’t keep Ingram from getting the bulk of the carries at the outset of this season. He’s registered more than 1,500 career rushing yards, 10 rushing scores, 412 receiving yards, and five touchdown catches.
