Texas Football: Big 12 split on whether to play 2020 season
The Texas football program could be one of the driving forces as to what the Big 12 decides to do for the impending 2020 season.
At this point of the summer the college football season’s status very much remains up in the air. And while some programs appear to be fighting to save some form of the 2020 season, it’s hard to know where all of them stand right now. The Texas football program is going to be one of the more impactful teams in any of the Power Five conferences in terms of which way they lean on this decision too.
As it appears now, the Longhorns look like most of their administration wants to push for some form of an altered 2020 season in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
According to a report from Brian Davis of the Austin-American Statesman from early this week, the Texas administrators are mostly in favor of pushing for a 2020 season. But that is a constantly-evolving storyline that changes by day.
And it’s not only the Longhorns that are having their 2020 season constantly in flux. None of the Power Five conferences are really in sync, and that was true through the saga of them deciding whether to play a non-conference schedule this fall.
But wanting to play is not the case for all of the 10 Big 12 programs heading into the supposed start of the 2020 season. A report from Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports on Aug. 10 detailed that the Big 12 “remains divided” on whether they should still play the 2020 season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thamel also mentioned that whatever the Big Ten and the PAC-12 decide in the coming days will carry a big impact on what the Big 12 ultimately goes with. While they remained very much in the thick of college football headlines in the last 24-48 hours, the Big Ten and PAC-12 have yet to make a concrete decision about what to do for the 2020 season.
As it stands now, the Longhorns are supposed to open their 2020 season at home on Sep. 12 against the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA. But obviously that remains very much in flux as they are ramping up for training camp/fall practice on the Forty Acres.
