3) Why Texas football will dominate UTEP: New backfield trio

There’s going to be a new three-headed monster at the running back position for the Longhorns this fall. That doesn’t even include what Texas will get from the former Division II graduate transfer running back Gabriel Watson.

Texas brings back junior running back and former four-star recruit Keaontay Ingram and fellow former four-star recruit and converted quarterback Roschon Johnson. And they also bring in the nation’s top ranked running back prospect from the 2020 recruiting cycle, five-star Salpointe Catholic product Bijan Robinson.

The most potent of those running backs would seem to be Roschon, at least in Week 1. Rave reviews poured out of camp regarding Robinson and Johnson, but not as much was heard about Ingram. And to-be senior running back Daniel Young opted out of the 2020 season in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Texas gets out of the combination of Johnson and Ingram is nearly 2,000 total yards from scrimmage last season, while each averaged more than five yards per carry, and managed just shy of 20 total touchdowns. Robinson could add a similar level of production to what Johnson and Ingram gave this offense last year.

Apparently Watson could be a pretty potent weapon for the Longhorns too this fall, as he rushed for more than 25 rushing touchdowns and nearly 2,000 rushing yards at the DII level last season. If he comes through in a big way, there is a real possibility that Texas starts to form some sort of four-headed monster at running back early in the 2020 season.
